Talking with Politicians about Climate
(This is just my take on this event, however many people have different opinions and this does not reflect Climate NOW's view on politics. Climate NOW does take action to inspire politicians to take climate action, and looks at politicians solely based on their climate involvement; not political parties, etc.)
Last weekend I attended part of the 2019 California Democratic Convention. All 14 democratic presidential candidates attended hoping to persuade attendees to give them their vote. I went to hear some of the candidates speak, hoping to discover their thoughts on climate change and the Green New Deal.
In addition to hearing some of the candidates and other important politicians speak, I was able to meet some very important people including Representative Beto O'Rourke, Governor Jay Inslee, and Congressman Bernie Sanders; all of who are running for the 2020 presidential election. Of the three men, I was most impressed by Governor Jay Inslee's response. Governor Jay Inslee had a discussion with me about how his main priority is attacking the climate crisis. We talked a lot about Alexandria Villasenor, as Governor Inslee has stricked with Alexandria in the past. I was also able to speak to representative Beto O'Rourke and Congressman Bernie Sanders for a quick second, although they were busy and did not have enough time to answer my questions about the Green New Deal and their take on climate action.
In addition to meeting three presidential candidates I was able to hear speeches from Mayor of San Francisco London Breed, Governor of California Gavin Newsom, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Presidential Candidate Beto O'Rourke, and Presidential Candidate Elizabeth Warren. Every politician addressed the climate crisis, however very briefly. This was disappointing as I would have hoped to see more discussion on what actions they would take to combat climate change.
In conclusion, I hope to see more climate involvement from the Republican and Democratic parties. Members from Climate NOW will be addressing this issue as we come closer to presidential elections.
