<image:title>Stories - Why Ocean Acidification is One of The Most Pressing Climate Issues Right Now - And What We Can Do About It!</image:title>
<image:caption>Typically, water is neither acidic nor alkaline. However, this changes when carbon dioxide is introduced. When CO2 enters salt water (H2O), the two molecules combine to form a weak acid called carbonic acid (H2CO3). Since the chemical bonds that hold this molecule together are not very strong, the substance dissociates into positively-charged hydrogen ions (H+) and negatively charged bicarbonate ions (CO3-). (note: ions are atoms or molecules that have a charge as a result of losing or gaining electrons. Gaining electrons results in a negative ion; the loss of electrons results in a positive ion). This is why the water becomes more acidic; remember, more free-floating hydrogen ions means a lower pH.</image:caption>

Launching Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project in 2017, Sammie discovered the Buddy Bench after watching a video about the initiative. Designed to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship at school, Buddy Benches are a special place at school where a child can go if they want someone to talk to, promoting the message of kindness on the playground and elsewhere at school. When Sammie set out to establish a Buddy Bench at her elementary school, Haley Elementary, she asked her classmates and community to collect recycled bottle caps and plastic lids, materials that are used to make the benches. Her community responded overwhelmingly, collecting 1,600-pounds of materials, enough to build three benches. Sammie has since been involved in placing over 100 Buddy Benches at schools in the U.S. and internationally.</image:caption>

From there she channeled her profits into her non-profit “Youth Environmental Society” which provides high schoolers with a baseline environmental curriculum. These ventures have allowed her to be featured on NBC, ABC, The Washington Post, and internationally through the Voices of America Network. She is an advocate for climate change education and has pushed for the implementation of said curriculum through her position on her counties’ sustainability advisory board. He is working to build an army of activists, including fourth-grade students (who can visit our national parks free of charge), who will stand up and speak up for the parks. He began his campaign in April 2017 as a fourth-grader, in response to President Trump’s executive order to review and possibly eliminate 27 of our national monuments. Excitedly preparing to embark with his family on a cross country tour of the parks, Robbie decided to use the trip as a chance to share his message for President Trump’s administration: “Hands off our parks and monuments! <image:title>Rishika Vinnakota - RISHIKA VINNAKOTA - reusii</image:title>
<image:caption>Rishika Vinnakota is a 18 year old from the San Francisco Bay Area. She is an incoming high school senior who's passionate about ecopreneurship - business and the environment! She is the founder of Reusii, a reusable silicone food storage bag that targets single-use plastic in our daily lives. Reusii was initially just a mission: an affordable and accessible way to be environmentally-conscious. But after researching and developing the original product they decided a silicone bag would fit perfectly into the market and knew it would help a lot.</image:caption>
